We endorse and purchase CDs by both signed and unsigned artists. Here's why: While a big part of our mission is to help artists, we also serve the music-buying listener. That means we want to find artists our listeners will love, but probably would never hear about if it weren't for us.
If we find a great artist who's signed to a small label but who is relatively unknown, our listeners DEFINITELY want to know about that artist. So they're eligible!

How do you acquire the CDs from the artists?
We buy them directly from the artists. In a few cases, when an artist is signed to a small label or is distributed exclusively through a distributor, we buy CDs from the label or distributor.
You guys seem to think you're saving the world from bad pop. Aren't you being kind of idealistic?
Yes we are.
Because, while we respect clever indie-rock and indie-pop bands with lo-fi and punk roots, we think there's already a glut of various zines, websites and record labels peddling that kind of music. It's very hip, and it's just not hard to find.
On the other hand, finding the next Peter Gabriel is difficult, because the industry doesn't seem to think intelligent pop is particularly hip. We don't particularly care about how hip music is--only how good.
Still, if we find a lo-fi indie-pop band that makes music that, melodically and lyrically, blows our mind, you'll find it here.
